Sussex (East and West Sussex): Where and How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree After the Holidays January 2022
Sussex (East and West Sussex) councils and boroughs
Most areas have either :
- Kerbside collection (in some cases, cut the tree and put in the green waste bin - Some allow the whole Christmas tree to be placed by
the kerb), or
- Drop-off locations or
- Both
In ALL cases, remove all ornaments, tinsel, decorations, lights, stands, pots, planters, netting, etc.
Some household waste and recycling collections have been slightly delayed as a result of the national shortage of HGV drivers, which is affecting
haulage sectors throughout the UK. Most residents will not see any change from their normal waste collections dates as over 98% of all collections
are unaffected, but...
Always follow the link (click on the council or borough name) to get the most current information. There are often last
minute changes; do NOT assume nothing has changed since we last revised this page!.
- East Sussex -
You can find drop off points locally or, if chopped up into manageable pieces, you can recycle them via kerbside garden waste schemes. Alternatively, you can
take them to your tip (household waste recycling centre).Check with
your local borough or district council about how you can recycle your Christmas tree.
- Mid-Sussex -
There will be temporary sites where you
can drop off your real Christmas tree for recycling. These sites will be open between Friday 31 December 2021 and Friday 14 January 2022
(inclusive). Details of each site can be found on the map and table

Real Christmas trees can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) and placed in with the garden waste to ensure it is recycled into compost. If you live in Adur, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham or Worthing areas, and subscribe to a garden waste collection, you can place your real Christmas tree out for collection. Please note in Horsham your tree should be cut up and put inside your garden waste bin. In Mid Sussex, you can take your real Christmas tree to a designated collection point for recycling. For more information please check with your local district or borough council.
